Finnish Red Cross First Aid Course 8 hours®

The SPR First Aid Course 8 h® is an official first aid course in line with the Finnish Red Cross (SPR) training programme, designed to provide participants with the basic knowledge and skills required to administer life-saving first aid. The course covers the minimum skills that everyone should have in the event of a sudden emergency.

The training is delivered as an 8-hour online course, designed to be flexible and easy to complete regardless of time or location. The course is suitable both for those learning first aid skills for the first time and for those who need to update or refresh skills they have learnt previously.

Approvals and qualifications

• The Finnish Transport Safety Agency Traficom has approved the course as continuing professional development for lorry and coach drivers
• The course leads to 1 professional qualification, which is valid for 5 years
• The course also serves as a refresher course for the Finnish Red Cross First Aid Course EA 1®
  • To renew an EA 1® certificate, you must hold a valid EA 1® certificate

Course content

The SPR First Aid Course 8 h® covers the following topics:

• What to do in an emergency
• Recognising an unconscious person and providing first aid
• CPR for adults
• Using an automated external defibrillator (AED)
• First aid for a person who is choking
• First aid for the most common medical emergencies, such as:
  • chest pain
  • low blood sugar
  • cerebrovascular disorders
  • convulsions
  • severe allergic reaction
• Stopping severe bleeding
• First aid for circulatory collapse (shock)
• Accident prevention
• First aid for the most common cuts and burns
• Health promotion
• Mental first aid
• Group-specific weightings, where necessary

• For those who wish to refresh or review their first aid skills
• For transport professionals (professional qualifications)

The training covers real-life emergency situations, such as heart attacks, choking, basic life support, sudden medical emergencies, bleeding and shock.

The course content is based on the Finnish Red Cross’s official training framework, and the course has been developed and is maintained by paramedics and nurses whose main occupation is emergency medical care.

The trainers are First Aid and Health Education (ETK) trainers approved by the Finnish Red Cross.
