Frequently Asked Questions about Driver CPC and Training

Who needs a Driver CPC in freight transport?

All drivers with a category C driving licence are required to have a Driver CPC. This includes not only lorries but also traffic tractors if driven with a C-class licence. However, there are exceptions in legislation, such as private driving, where the CPC is not required.

What about passenger transport?

Holders of D1 or D-class licences need a Driver CPC for passenger transport. Private bus use is an exception if the vehicle is owned by the driver or a member of their household.

Where can I get Driver CPC training?

Training is provided by training centres approved by Traficom and the Ministry of Education and Culture. These centres use training programmes approved by Traficom.

Do I need to complete separate training for freight and passenger transport?

No. One training day updates the CPC for both freight and passenger transport. At least one day must be dedicated to defensive driving training.

Does the Driver CPC apply to private freight vehicles?

Yes, it applies to drivers regardless of whether the vehicle is registered for professional or private use, as long as the driving is not private.

Do our warehouse workers need Driver CPC?

Yes, if they transport goods not solely for their own work use.

Can maintenance staff drive a replacement bus without a CPC?

They also need a valid Driver CPC. An exception is made for test drives related to repairs or inspections.

Does a tyre fitter need a CPC when driving?

Yes, if the tyre fitter is collecting tyres as part of their job duties.

How is CPC applied to municipal employees?

Municipal driving falls under CPC requirements, except for personal (non-work-related) driving.

Why is Driver CPC training mandatory?

The goal is to improve road safety, support driver competence and well-being at work, and enhance the status of the profession.

Are there mandatory modules in the training?

Yes. One of the five training days must be focused on defensive driving. The other days can be selected from approved modules. No exams are included.

When should I renew my CPC?

You should complete the required training days in good time. Renewal can be applied for up to six months before the expiry date.

How is the Driver CPC shown during inspections?

You must present either a separate Driver CPC card or a CPC code marked on your driving licence.

How often must the training be completed?

The training must be renewed every five years and consists of five training days.
