Hot work card training – an important step towards a safe working environment

Hot work card training is aimed at everyone who does or intends to do hot work at work. Hot work is any work that uses flames, generates sparks or intense heat, and that involves a fire hazard.

Typical hot work includes, for example:

  • Welding
  • Burning and arc cutting
  • Construction and repair work
  • Using gas burners and hot air blowers

In many workplaces, a hot work card is a mandatory qualification and a prerequisite for working.

Why is a hot work card important?

The purpose of hot work card training is to ensure that the employee:

  • Identifies the risks associated with hot work and knows how to prevent dangerous situations
  • Acts safely and responsibly during hot work
  • Knows how to act correctly in emergency situations, such as when a fire breaks out

The hot work card is approved by SPEK and is valid for 5 years, after which it must be renewed. After completing the training, you will receive an official card that proves your competence in hot work.

Training content

Hot work card training is a one-day intensive training that includes both theory and practical exercises. During the day, you will go through:

  • Hot work safely – safe operating methods and precautions

  • Hot work risks – identifying and managing risks in different environments
  • Safety measures and protection drill – using the right protection methods
  • Accident response – practical instructions for emergencies
  • Initial firefighting drill – firefighting skills in a fire situation
  • Course exam – demonstration of competence and approved completion of the training

Hot Work Card® – obtain or renew your hot work qualification easily

The Hot Work Card® is a mandatory qualification for anyone who does hot work. Hot work refers to work that creates sparks or uses open flames or other heat that poses a fire hazard.

Typical examples of hot work include:

  • welding and cutting
  • metal grinding and cutting
  • using a gas torch
  • working with a hot air blower

A hot work permit is often required based on the safety instructions of the client, insurance company or construction site.

When is a Hot Work Permit not required?

A hot work permit is generally not required if the work is carried out:

  • at a permanent hot work site
  • using fire-safe work methods
  • on sites where there is no insurance requirement

However, the requirement is always determined on a case-by-case basis, so it is worth checking in advance.
